A recent confirmation lesson on prophets. As a child, I thought a prophet was a fortune teller. But truth is, a prophet is a truth teller. Someone who has an especially close relationship with the Divine, and speaks on God's behalf. Most often, in the Bible, prophets called for repentance, called for people to straighten up and fly right. Jonah did not want to give the message to Ninevah, so he ran in the opposite direction. When he DID preach the short message, Repent, the city obeyed and was saved. Elijah witnessed a mighty wind, an earthquake and a fire, before discovering God's presence in sheer silence. And I wonder. Do I follow God's will or run? Do I look for God in big events or can I be open to silence?
